THE LORD’S FAVOR IN SPRING

In Hosea 6:3, the prophet Hosea tells us the Lord will respond to us as the coming of rains in early spring, and His favor refreshes like spring rain. Therefore, we should ask the Lord for rain in the spring, for He makes the storm clouds and will send rain showers so every field becomes a lush pasture (Zechariah 10:1). He will make the wilderness grasslands become a lush pasture, and the hillsides blossom with joy (Psalm 65:11-12). He will make the wilderness become a fertile field where bountiful crops yield, crops of justice to rule, and crops of righteousness to bring peace, quietness, and confidence, where we will live safely and quietly at home (Isaiah 32:15-18). He will give us good pastureland on the high heels of Israel, where we will lie down in pleasant places in peace and feed on the lush pastures (Ezekiel 34:14-15). He will bless us and our homes around His holy hill and send the showers we need in the proper season, where orchards and fields yield bumper crops, and we all will live safely (Ezekiel 34:26-27). He will let us rest in green pastures, lead us beside peaceful streams, and renew our strength (Psalm 23:2).

Not only the Lord will bring spring rain for fields to become green, He also brings spring rain to turn deserts into pools of water and dry lands into springs of water (Psalm 107:35). The parched grounds will then become pools of spring water to satisfy thirsty lands (Isaiah 35:7). Likewise, He will pour out His water to quench our spiritually thirsty souls and irrigate the parched field of our hearts (Isaiah 44:3), for He says in John 7:38-39 that anyone who believes in Him and is thirsty may come to Him and drink, and “Rivers” of living water will flow from His heart. He will guide us continually when our souls are dry by giving us water and restoring our strength. Thus, we will be like a well-watered garden and an ever-flowing spring (Isaiah 58:11). He says in Revelation 21:6 that He will freely give the springs of the water of life to all who are thirsty.

In addition to bringing spring rain to turn fields into lush pastures and water-thirsty lands, the Sovereign Lord will show His justice to the nations of the world. At that time, He will make His righteousness like a garden in early spring with plants springing everywhere. Then, everybody will praise Him (Isaiah 61:11). Yes, flowers will be abundant and singing for joy! The wastelands will rejoice and blossom with spring crocuses (Isaiah 35:1-2). Plants that grow in marshes and lakes, such as marsh grass, reeds, and rushes, will also flourish (Isaiah 35:7).

Solomon prayed in Psalm 72:6 for the Lord’s ruling to be refreshing like spring rain on freshly cut grass and showers that water the earth. Likewise, in Psalm 72:16, he also prayed for people to thrive like grass in a field. For this to happen, we must let the teaching of the Lord’s words fall on us like rain on tender grass and showers on young plants (Deuteronomy 32:2-3). The Lord will then sprinkle clean water on us to give us a new spirit and heart that is tender and responsive to follow His decrees and carefully obey His regulations (Ezekiel 34:25-27). We will thrive like watered grass and willows on a riverbank (Isaiah 44:4).

In Isaiah 45:8, the Lord prays to the heavens to open up, pour out its righteousness, and let the earth be widely open so His salvation and righteousness can sprout together. Therefore, while we are in the spring season, now is the time to seek the Lord by plowing up the hard ground in our hearts and planting good seeds of righteousness, such as His teaching, decrees, and regulations within, that He may come and shower righteousness upon us and harvest a crop of His love (Hosea 10:12). The Lord will greatly bless His people. Wherever they plant the seed, bountiful crops will spring up (Isaiah 32:20), crops of salvation, love, righteousness, peace, and justice—Kenneth Sullivan.
