Fear of the Lord provides healing to our bodies and strength to our bones (Proverbs 3:8). Therefore, if we listen and pay attention to His words of faith and let them penetrate deep into our hearts, they will bring us life and healing to our whole bodies (Proverbs 4:22). We Christians should have hope through the gospels of Matthew (4:23-24, 8:17, 9:35, and 14:14) and Luke (4:40 and 7:21) that Jesus heals all types of diseases and illnesses, including terminal illness, according to the gospel of John 4:46-53. Since we have that hope, we trust the Lord to heal our diseases and illnesses when we are in bad health. Not only can the Lord heal our illness and disease, but He can also heal our broken hearts.
The Lord provides healing to the brokenhearted. Whenever we are going through a grieving process, we have hope through Isaiah 53:3-4, Psalm 126:5, and Psalm 147:3 that Jesus sympathizes with the brokenhearted because He is a Man of sorrows, acquainted with grief, who bears our griefs and carries our sorrows, heals our broken hearts by binding up our wounds, and reaps joy for us when we sow tears. Therefore, Nehemiah 8:10 tells us not to be dejected and sad, for the joy of the Lord is our strength. Since we have that hope, we trust in the Lord to comfort us by healing our broken hearts and giving us joy, which is our strength in place of sorrow, when we are hurt by grief. Speaking of strength, the Lord will provide us with strength when we become weary.
Whenever we become weary, we must trust in the Lord because He gives power and strength to His people (Psalm 68:35) and tells us that His grace is all we need because His power works best in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). We have hope through Isaiah 40:29 and Jeremiah 31:25 that Jesus offers rest to the weary soul and gives power to the weak and increasing strength to the powerless. In Matthew 11:28, Jesus invited all those who are weary and carry heavy burdens to come to Him so He can give them rest for their souls. If we accept His invitation by coming to Him for rest, He will supply us with power and strength by His grace. Like the prophet Habakkuk in 3:19, we can trust the Lord as our strength to enable us to tread on the heights like a surefooted deer. The Lord will also provide strength when we become frail due to old age.
When David lost his strength in his old age, he prayed to the Lord not to set him aside, nor abandon him (Psalm 71:9). Even though his health began to fall, David confessed to the Lord that He remained the strength of his heart (Psalm 73:26). Consequently, God renewed his youth like an eagle (Psalm 103:5), for Isaiah 40:31 says those who trust the Lord will find new strength to soar high on wings like eagles, running without growing weary and walking without fainting. Therefore, like David, if we accept the Lord by putting our trust in Him as the strength of our hearts, even when we reach old age, He will also see us as youthful and vigorous as eagles, soaring high in the sky, thus being young at heart and staying forever young.
The bottom line is that the Lord says in Jeremiah 30:17 that He will give us back our health and heal our wounds. Therefore, we must continue trusting the Lord for our healing when we are in bad health or pain due to a broken heart. We must also continue to seek the Lord and His strength (1 Chronicles 16:11) and be strong in Him and His mighty power whenever we become physically weak (Ephesians 6:10)—Kenneth Sullivan.
