Etowah County Sheriff’s Office arrests two women in separate child endangerment cases

Etowah County Sheriff Jonathon Horton said two women have been arrested in connection with two separate child endangerment cases.

Samantha Ellis, 41, of Gadsden, turned herself into the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office on Sept. 16.

Authorities said Ellis exposed a child to an environment where controlled substances were produced, ingested, or distributed.

Ellis tested positive for marijuana while giving birth. The baby also tested positive for marijuana, according to police documents.

In a separate case, Khodejah Thomas, 27, of Gadsden, has been charged with the chemical endangerment of a child by exposing the child to an environment where controlled substances are produced, ingested, or distributed.

Investigator Brandi Fuller said on Aug. 12, officers responded to a report of a possible overdose at a home in Gadsden.

Officers found Thomas and a 3-month-old child in the home. Both were taken to a local hospital and drug tested.

Officials said Thomas tested positive for cocaine, opiates, hydrocodone, and oxycodone. The child tested positive for cocaine, benzoylecgonine, and opiates, according to the police report.

Thomas was taken to the Etowah County Detention Center.
