FINDING LONG LIFE, HEALTH, AND STRENGTH THROUGH FEAR OF THE LORD

(All Scriptures came from the New Living Translation of the Holy Bible).

It is in God that His people live, move, and exist (Acts 17:28). He carried us before we were born and will continue to care for and save us throughout our lifetime—until we grow old (Isaiah 46:3-4). He promises He will always be with us, even to the end of the age (Matthew 28:20).

Like Moses in Psalm 90:12, we must ask God to teach us to realize that life is short on Earth, thereby we must also grow in wisdom because it will multiply our days and add years to our life (Proverbs 9:11).   However, we should not be impressed by our wisdom (Proverbs 3:7). Instead, we should get it from the fear of the Lord because it is the foundation of its trueness (Job 28:28, Psalm 111:10, and Proverbs 9:10). He alone understands its way and knows where to find it (Job 23:23). Therefore, if we need wisdom, we should ask the Lord and He will generously give it to us without rebuke, as long as our faith is in Him alone (James 1:5-6).

Fear of the Lord comes by obeying His commandments (Psalm 111:10); if we store them in our hearts, we will live many years and have a satisfying life (Proverbs 3:1 and 2).  Fear God and obeying His commands is everyone’s duty (Ecclesiastes 12:13), for they lead to a longer life (Proverbs 10:27 and 22:4). He will reward us with a long life and give us His salvation (Psalm 91:16). In addition to long life, wisdom from fear of the Lord also provides healing to our bodies and strength to our bones (Proverbs 3:8). If we listen and pay attention to the words of wisdom and let them penetrate deep into our hearts, they will bring us life and healing to our whole bodies (Proverbs 4:22).

When David lost his strength in his old age, he prayed to the Lord not to set him aside nor abandon him (Psalm 71:9).  Even though his health fell. His spirit became weak, and David confessed to the Lord that He remained the strength of his heart (Psalm 73:26). Consequently, God renewed his youth like an eagle (Psalm 103:5), for Isaiah 40:31 says those who trust the Lord will find new strength to soar high on wings like eagles, running without growing weary and walking without fainting. Therefore, like David, if we accept the Lord, putting our trust in Him as the strength of our hearts, even when we reach old age, He will also see us as youthful and vigorous as eagles, soaring high in the sky, thus being young at heart and staying forever young.

The Lord searches the whole world to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him (2 Chronicles 16:9).  Since this is so, we should search for the Lord and His strength, continually seeking Him (1 Chronicles 16:11 and Psalm 105:4).  The benefits for doing so will lead to long life, health, and strength—Kenneth Sullivan.
