When Elected Leaders Let Us Down

Marcus J. Echols aka “The Grassroots Mouthpiece”

Juandalynn Deleathia “Lee Lee” Givan (D-Birmingham) is an American lawyer and politician. She serves as a member of the Alabama House of Representatives and has let the citizens of Decatur Alabama and the whole state down in a major way. The citizens of Decatur, Alabama want transparency and justice for Steve Perkins and his family. While Rep.Givan seeks to win the revamped Congressional District 2 seat the people of Decatur, Alabama are suffering the repercussions, hurt, and disappointment from her work over many years on Alabama’s new police body cam law which says police don’t have to disclose the camera footage. It also gives them the right to deny a request to view the body cam and get this “without reason” to the family or person requesting.

Her (Givan)  bill signed by Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) looks like some sort of ” political pump-fake” because it’s the weakest effort I’ve seen in 25 years in the grassroots for transparency or justice for families like the family of Steve Perkins in Morgan County, Alabama. Why do I say this? On January 27, 2022, Givan asked for the resignation of Brookside’s mayor, judge, and prosecutor. She stated, “[The police of Brookside] have been stopping residents… harassing them, giving exorbitant numbers of citations (or something to that effect) in the city of Brookside.” She commented on the racial profiling and harassment of women. Following this, she began to call for an investigation by Steve Marshall, noting that “many outlets have already sent a request to him to take a greater role in this issue.” What was this “political pump-fake” all about? “Political two-face ism” is toxic in public office positions. How can Rep. Givan (D) complain on January 27, 2022 police harassment and and what sounds like unjust stops when her sponsored body cam bill that says that police DO NOT HAVE TO release the bodycam footage goes into effect June 2023?
Clay Perkins also known as Steve to many people was, unjustly, killed by Police Officers of Decatur, Alabama. Clay was well-known in his community for being a kind-hearted, family-oriented man who loved the gym. He worked hard and loved his family. On the early morning of September 29th, 2023, policemen hid outside of Clay’s home with no probable cause. It is said a tow truck driver contacted the officers to take Clay’s vehicle without cause. There is no plausible evidence indicating law enforcement followed orders or regulations. Without law enforcement acknowledging their presence, Law enforcement abruptly fired multiple shots at Clay while Clay remained on his property.
Clay leaves a loving wife, children, and family to cherish. It saddens us to know that in 2023, an innocent black life was taken by the system. The city failed to contact his family to offer condolences or pay respect. The city failed to notify his wife or family of the incident. However, the city found time to release a statement to the media.
As the family, friends, and community seek justice for Clay, this group offers updates and support as we seek answers on why this tragedy transpired and resulted in such a wrongful and tragic death.
Juandalynn Givan (D-Birmingham) put forth a bill and got it signed into law that now haunts not only the Perkins family but every single citizen in Alabama. So many questions are being asked at the grassroots about why she did this “political pump-fake” about police abuses and the very next year we have her body cam bill that lawyers say is weaker than dishwater when it comes to transparency and justice for families like Steve Perkins. #JUSTICEFORSTEVEPERKINS
